Should a PPL holder require maximum flexibility in terms of when and where he/she can fly safely and legally, then a full Instrument Rating (IR) is an essential add-on qualification to a pilot's licence.

In light of the extra privileges conferred upon the holder of an IR, the training requirements for the award of the rating are somewhat more involved (and all pilot's would agree more demanding) than that for the IMC Rating, and these requirements are also dictated by whether the IR is intended for use on single-engine or multi-engine types.
