Flight instructor course

The Aim

The aim of the JAR Flight Instructor Course is to provide the candidate with the ability to instruct a student to the level required for the issue of a PPL (A) licence.

Entry Requirements:
  • Completed 200 hours total flight time and 100 hours as pilot-in-command

  • Completed 30 hours on single engine piston powered aeroplanes (5 hours within the preceding 6 months)

  • Received 10 hours instrument flight instruction (of which up to 5 may be in a simulator)

  • Completed 20 hours cross-country flight time as pilot-in-command including a 540 km cross- country flight

  • Passed a course of theoretical instruction for CPL (A) or ATPL (A) as set out in JAR-FCL

  • Passed a specific pre-entry flight test within the preceding 6 months
Course Description

The ground training consists of classroom lectures, tutorials, long briefings and directed private study. During this part of the course the student instructors will refresh and bring up to date their technical knowledge and be taught the principles of basic instruction and how to apply them at the PPL level. The student instructors will practice the planning of classroom lesson periods and develop their ability to give short and long briefings.

Most of the flight training will be conducted in the Piper Warrior. During this phase the student instructor will be taught to demonstrate and to evaluate all of the PPL exercises from the right hand seat. Whenever possible another student instructor will be carried in the rear where valuable experience may be gained as an observer.

A C150 or Slingsby Firefly T67M260 will be used for teaching the demonstration and evaluation of the spinning exercise.

The remaining five hours flight instruction are mutual instruction in a Cessna 152 where two student instructors fly together in order to practice flight lessons.

The training comprises:

  • 125 hours ground instruction

  • 24 hours minimum of dual instruction in the Warrior

  • 1 hours minimum of dual instruction in the Cessna 152

  • 5 hours mutual instruction in the Cessna 152

Duration:

Training is full-time or part-time, the full-time course lasting between 4 and 6 weeks dependent on weather conditions.
