Frequently Asked Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: CAN ANYONE LEARN TO FLY?

A:
Yes

Q: HOW CAN I TELL IF I AM SUITABLE FOR TRAINING?

A: We recommend that before committing yourself to a complete course, you take an introductory flying lesson, in this way you will be able to see whether you like flying. We find that a person with a wish to fly, will want to commit themselves to a PPL Course at Stapleford.

Q: IS THERE A MEDICAL TEST AND CAN I WEAR GLASSES?

A:
In order to qualify for a PPL you need to be over the age of seventeen, although you can take lessons from fourteen. There is no upper age limit, so long as you can meet the medical requirements, which are not excessively stringent. Glasses can be worn and do not prevent a prospective pilot from flying, although you need to produce a six-month prescription and an extra pair of glasses.

Medicals can be arranged by the reception staff at Stapleford and take place at the airfield most Sundays and Thursdays. For a National PPL, a medical certificate issued by your GP to DVLA standards for HGV is sufficient.

Q: WHAT ARE THE PRIVILEGES OF THE PRIVATE PILOTS LICENCE?

A: Once gained, your PPL will enable you to fly single engine piston aircraft. You may carry your family and friends on flights worldwide. Later you may wish to add further qualifications to your licence, i.e. a Night Rating, Multi-engine or an Instrument Rating. This allows you to fly in cloud and airspace normally reserved for commercial aircraft. We can provide training for all of these at Stapleford and we will be happy to supply you with further information.

Q: DO YOU NEED SPECIAL CLOTHING?

A: No. Cockpit comfort in all our training aircraft is similar to that of a modern day family car, any comfortable clothing will do, however we recommend ladies wear trousers rather than a skirt and high heels are not practical.

Q: WILL I NEED SPECIAL EQUIPMENT, MAPS, BOOKS ETC?

A: Yes. We have a Pilots Shop at Stapleford, Gerran Aviation, which is able to supply all your aeronautical needs. Your instructor will advise you on any purchases you may require.

Q: ARE THE AIRCRAFT WELL MAINTAINED?

A: We have seventeen Cessna 152 and five PA 28 Warrior aircraft in our fleet, both long-proven to be the safest and easiest light aircraft to fly. We also have PA28R Arrows for PPL hire and training. Our aircraft are maintained to a Public Transport Category at our own CAA/JAR approved maintenance department.

Q: SO HOW MUCH DOES IT COST?

A: The cost of gaining your PPL is not as expensive as you may think especially if you compare it with other activities such as ski-ing or golf. If you wish to pay for a complete course of 45 hours in advance we are able to offer you a 10% discount on the hourly rate. This is inclusive of all home landing fees, fuel and VAT. There is an annual club membership fee of £80.00 plus an initial £10.00 joining fee.

Q: GROUND SCHOOL FOR WRITTEN EXAMS

A: Our school has a resident ground school examiner, who runs Monday evening lectures which commence at 19.00hrs and must be booked in advance at Reception. The cost is £15.00 per evening to be paid to reception at time of booking. You may sit the exam at your leisure, as there are four full time and one part time examiners at Stapleford, the cost is £20.00 per exam.

We also run a monthly six-day brush up course, Monday to Saturday at 09.15 hrs until approx. 17.00hrs. The six-day course is not inclusive of examination fees and is charged at £35.00 per day payable at time of booking with Reception. The CAA will issue your licence on completion of the Skill Test. At the present time Licence issue fee is £164 payable to the CAA.
